A patch that still shows in Manchester, NH

Somebody already tried

Quite a lot of our work is the second attempt. Somebody — a previous owner, a handyman, occasionally the homeowner on a determined Saturday — filled the damage, painted it, and now there is a rectangle you can see from the doorway whenever the light is right. The frustrating part is that the underlying repair is often perfectly sound. What failed was everything after it.

The four ways a patch gives itself away

It sits proud, because the compound was applied thickly in one go instead of built up gradually. It stops abruptly, because the edges were never carried far enough out to fade into the wall. It is smooth on a textured wall, because whoever did it had no way to reproduce the texture. Or it is a slightly different sheen, because fresh compound drinks paint at a different rate than the aged painted surface around it and nobody primed first.

Fixing somebody else's repair

Usually the sound patch stays. The area gets skimmed wider and feathered properly so there is no edge to catch the light, the texture is sprayed to match the surrounding wall and knocked back to the same profile, the whole area is primed so it absorbs evenly, and the wall is painted out to a corner rather than spotted in. Occasionally the original work is bad enough to remove, but that is rarer than you might think.

Check it before the painter leaves

Hold a work lamp close to the wall and let the light run along the surface rather than pointing at it. Anything proud, hollow or scratched shows immediately and can be corrected in ten minutes while the tools are still out. The same inspection a fortnight later means a return visit. This is the test we apply to our own work before we pack up, and you are welcome to hold the lamp.

Often turns up alongside
