Test first, then scrape

The test that comes first

What is revealed underneath is rarely pretty — gouged board with every seam and fastener showing — which is why the scrape is only half the job.

A scraped ceiling needs a full skim across its entire surface, not just over the joints, then sanding and priming, before it looks like a ceiling rather than a repair. Quotes that seem surprisingly cheap for popcorn removal often price the scraping and leave you to discover the finishing separately. Ours includes it; ask anyone else whether theirs does.
When covering it is smarter
Texture with several coats of paint on it has been locked in place and no longer wets through, so it comes away in stubborn flakes and doubles the hours. A ceiling that has taken more than one leak is usually too soft to skim once it is bare. Either way, fixing a fresh layer of board over what is already up there costs less, makes far less mess, and gives up about half an inch of headroom.
